Text margins paratranslation in the reception of French nineteenth-century works in Spain<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

There have been numerous debates about the convenience of translator\u2019s visibility on translated works, with many an opinion shared throughout the history of translation\u2014both for and against\u2014, even to the point of being considered \u00abhonte\u00bb (Aury, 1963), \u00abviolence\u00bb (Hersant, 1995) or \u00abruse grossi\u00e8re\u00bb. We will show how the translator emerges in every text they translate, by means of paratextual instances (prologues, prefaces, and footnotes). We will analyze in detail these translator\u2019s visibility spaces\u2014a translator who, little by little, claims small pieces of the work\u2019s ownership, even \u201cmanipulating\u201d the original text by removing some element, or adding something from their own authorship. Our focus will be on examining the presence of translators in the numerous treaties and manuals translated in Spain during the 19th century, dealing with topics such as medicine, pharmacy, education, hygiene, or agronomy, amongst others. The concept of \u201cparatranslation\u201d, and translation\u2019s paratranslative focus, will make us ponder on \u201cc\u00f3mo los paratextos influyen sobre la manera en que un nuevo p\u00fablico percibe una literatura traducida\u201d (Yuste Fr\u00edas: 2015: 66).<\/span><\/p>

is a Translation and Interpretation Professor at the University of C\u00f3rdoba. Throughout her lengthy career, she has given lectures on French Language and Literature, Tourism Translation, Literary Translation, and Agri-Food and Biomedical Texts Specialized Translation. Having specialized in the History of Specialized Translation, Manuela \u00c1lvarez has authored many publications in high-impact journals and publishing houses. Her recent monograph, <\/span>La visibilidad del traductor en los tratados de agricultura, agronom\u00eda, viticultura y vinificaci\u00f3n (1773-1900)<\/span><\/i><\/a>, <\/span><\/i>published in 2022 by the Comares publishing house, has been reviewed in <\/span>Estudios de Traducci\u00f3n <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Meta: Journal des Traducteurs<\/span><\/i>, among other journals. She has directed several Doctoral Theses on a wide variety of subjects and has been a guest speaker in a high number of congresses, both national and international. She presides over the Congreso Internacional <\/span>TRADITUR (Traducci\u00f3n y Discurso Tur\u00edstico)<\/span><\/i>, which had its third edition taking place at the University of C\u00f3rdoba in 2023. On an international scope, she is a regular collaborator with the Sorbonne and Paris Cit\u00e9 universities, as well as the Paris ISIT, in which she has done teaching and research stays. Manuela \u00c1lvarez is, also, a main international and autonomic R&D researcher, as well as an external evaluator for high-relevance journals\u2014national and international\u2014 such as <\/span>\u00c7\u00e9dille<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Tangence<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Mutatis Mutandis,<\/span><\/i> and<\/span> Onom\u00e1zein<\/span><\/i>, among others<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n
