Introduction to research: first steps, publications, and conferences

Is a part-time lecturer in Translation and Interpreting, and Senior Research Support Technician at the Universidade de Vigo.

This workshop is an introduction to research for those who want to start their research career as well as for those who have already enrolled in a PhD program. An overview of all key aspects needed to develop an academic career will be presented. Therefore, this seminar is focused on introducing the audience to the main tools used to disseminate their academic productions, as well as describing how academic journals and conferences work. In particular, the workshop will deal with the following matters:

  • Creating an academic profile: biographical note, ORCID, social networks, research interests.
  • Types of publications (articles, book chapters, reviews, etc.).
  • Academic journals: scope, indexation, quartiles, DOI, etc.
  • Call for Papers: what they are and where to find them.
  • Preparing abstracts and keywords.
  • Academic conferences: how they work and recommendations.
  • Professional opportunities.

The practical part of this workshop will consist in the elaboration of the participants’ own academic profile.
