Translation and Heritage

(Prof.ª Anxo Fernández Ocampo)

Linguistic variability can be considered a risk in the tourism industry. However, this belief conceals a unique circumstance in the professional world of translation: translating tourist destinations or museum itineraries is not about navigating between two languages, but about mastering the language of the showcases, mediating between the public and the landscape, the monuments, the legends, and the textures. The collective and multilingual use of landscapes and heritage assets therefore involves cultivating a style of translation that activates the gears of curiosity and can provide equivalencies for sharing a sensitive experience.
