Film and Translation

(Prof.ª Xoán Montero Domínguez)

The relationship between film and translation begins with silent films, by means of translating the inter-titles. However, with the arrival of sound film, in the late twenties, dubbing becomes the preferred modality by spectators within the state of Spain. The aim of this subject is to offer an original perspective that delves into the different parts of the dubbing process and not just into the translating phase. Thus, a new scope regarding the reasons behind the arrival of dubbing in Europe is presented, analyzing the semiotic information that emerges from the image, delving into translation for dubbing as an intimate action linked to the setting phase and, finally, initiating the student in interpreting techniques for dubbing.
